Spring break week is upon us and so is the time to check in with our grant support advisory team. Thank you all for sharing in this exciting adventure.
ODE Grant Kick-Off:
On March 20th, Jane Nofziger (District Business Director) and I attended the CTE Revitalization Grant Kick-off at Willamette ESD. The Oregon Department of Education led discussions and provided resources for successful implementation of the twenty-eight CTE revitalization grants awarded statewide. A major message of the day was to establish strong community partnerships in order to ensure ongoing grant success. It is exactly this strong community support that gives us a promising head start.
A big thank you to the healthcare professionals from Santiam hospital and PT Northwest for sharing your career story and guidance with our Health Occupations class. It is the highlight of each week! The students have learned much about a number of high-demand, high-wage jobs in healthcare, and they have just completed training in basic CPR and AED operation. Thank you to: Adam Maurer–EMT/Ambulance & CPR, Guesly Dessioux D.O., Amber Tinney RN- ER, Sue Arbaugh and Amy – Pharmacy, Jim Richardson and Erin – Lab science, Dr. Eric Von Borstel and Kelly – Anesthesiology, Corey Yates – Athletic Trainer, and to Lauren Benjamin – Marketing, for helping to make this possible. We have eleven additional guests scheduled to visit our classroom before June and have much more to experience.
CTE Summer Boot Camp
A portion of our grant will cover two summer learning experiences for middle school kids (2018 and 2019). We are in the final stages of completing our summer boot camp agenda for incoming 7th and 8th grade students. Principal Kirby and CTE teachers have scheduled fun and experiential activities for the week. The middle school students will spend a full day in each of the four CTE pathways we offer: Agriculture, Manufacturing and Construction, Business, and Biomedical Health Sciences. Our confirmed plans include:
- OMSI — Robot Revolution
- Western U / COMP NW — experiential learning with med students
- OSU — wave generation and seismic labs
- Hands on learning in manufacturing and construction shops
- Local Business tours
All costs for food, transportation, and expenses are grant supported to meet the needs of the under-served. We plan to share career pathway opportunities with parents as well as students and capture the interest of middle school students before they enter high school. Summer Boot Camp will take place the week of June 18th – 22nd, 2018.
We will keep you posted on grant activities as they progress. On behalf of Principal Kirby and Superintendent Gardner, I thank you for your commitment to support this grant, our implementation, and ongoing plans for student success.
